Is a French National allowed to stay in Mauritius for more than 6 months after having a baby there?
Her case is not special, babies can fly pretty much straight after birth (a week old), there is no reason as to why a baby can't fly under 6 months, unless there is a serious medical condition.

wardah | 15 May 2012 18:10
Is a French National allowed to stay in Mauritius for more than 6 months after having a baby there?
Where are you having your baby, a clinic or government hospital? Also why have you taken the decision to have your baby here rather than in France? I thought you can only stay here for 6 months then you will be deported but I may be wrong.

Will legalisation of abortion in Mauritius give rise to more 'fake rape'?
Hmm its difficult to say, to be honest only stupid and uneducated people are the ones to try it. One way I can think of that a woman would use this to their advantage is someone who is a 'good girl' having sexual relations, finds out their pregnant and to save face and not dishonour the family cry rape!

Men should always carry condoms and shouldn't trust women when it comes to contraception, they are very easy to fail. For people who are worried that girls will cry rape you should have evidence that sex was consensual such as not having one night stands and telling your friends about your new partner. This way if a claim was to arise your friends can back you up, also don't forget there are emails and texts so save them too, to protect yourself.

I find that its such a shame that people fear false rape claims because I worry that people will avoid relationships and use prostitutes instead which will lead to an increase in sexually transmitted diseases.

What is the cheapest way to make international phone calls?
If you want free then why not Skype, Messenger or Facebook chat but if you want actual phone calls then Voip is the cheapest I have found.

Will legalisation of abortion in Mauritius give rise to more 'fake rape'?
I believe women should have a choice. There is a huge list of reasons as to why a woman would put herself through that. No-one should ever bring a child into the world if they are not ready or financially stable! Its just wrong, why would you want to ruin two lives? Also for those that say give the child up for adoption, how many people really adopt each year? Many children stay in orphanages for years and some never ever get adopted why would you put a child through that.

I found that the amount of people here that get 'back door' abortions are shocking, nearly everyone I know know's someone who's had one too, yet they are supposed to be illegal! Rape is actually very difficult to prove and the majority of cases fall through before reaching court because of lack of evidence anyway, so I don't see an issue there.

Also I don't understand how this can lead to 'medical tourism' do you know that abortions in most countries are free? In Mauritius is costs around Rs 25,000 add this to the cost of flights... you see my point.

I also don't understand how abortion replaces contraception, everyone knows that there are huge risks involved that can lead to infertility and even death in rare cases. So I don't see how any sane person would use this as a form of contraception.

If abortion upsets so many people they should start living in this century and teach their children about contraception and abstinence! Contraception here is still taboo yet I see so many underage girls parading around in short skirts and clothing not decent for their age, if the government doesn't raise awareness the parents should. I know many women in their 20's and 30's who don't have a clue about contraception and they're married! They fall pregnant and don't know about it for weeks even months, that's even more damaging to the unborn child.

Anyway abortion should be legalised because there are many fake doctors that perform them too, this increases the risks even more and like I said all women should have a choice, its their body at the end of the day.

What do you think about the new 1 litre plastic coke bottle?
I prefer glass bottles because its environmentally friendly. I am quite shocked that Mauritius hasn't introduced recycling yet, plastic bottles are unnecessary and cause damage to the environment. Also like it has been mentioned glass bottles are by far cheaper than plastic.

Then again I understand for convenience people will buy plastic, its lighter and disposable but still I urge people to ditch plastic and go for glass, do your bit and trying to save this planet from destruction!

We are being fooled by money minders!?
Really, my friend bought a mobile phone that had a years warranty, it broke within a month, he wanted his money back so he could buy a better one (by adding more money to the refund amount) and the shop refused. They said that he wouldn't get his money back, they would either replace it with another brand new phone or they would send it off for repair, he was stuck and got his faulty phone swapped for a brand new one instead.

IcarSAGAU | 06 May 2012 19:08
We are being fooled by money minders!?
Wow, thanks so much for sharing this we need more people to come forward with cases like these so we can boycott them. Also I would urge people to read all the small print and ask the same questions a few times before proceeding. It's such a shame you can't get your money back, in the UK you would get a full refund as they mis-sold you the product.

How to save our monkeys and stop the animal cruelty business in Mauritius?
Unfortunately people in Mauritius do not have freedom of speech or human rights so it is impossible to even think about animal rights. Also the government get a lot of money in taxes by these businesses, so for them it helps the economy (supposedly).

Don't get me wrong I am an active supporter against animal cruelty and do not agree with monkeys being used for any kind of testing but in Mauritius people do not care that much and have no money to donate to charities that can help save the monkeys.

I will be sharing this on facebook to raise awareness in the hope that people will start caring but I won't hold my breath.

I use the site daily to check the TV Guide and let me tell you its always like this, its such a pain! Plus its not very accurate they give you a schedule but never stick to it, I can't count the number of times I have been waiting for a film to start that never does

Do you use any other search engines besides Google?
Google I found is more reliable, plus you can customize your search more. Also Google maps, images and shopping are easy to switch back and forth to, no need for more tabs when searching, everything is in one place

What are the requirements to work in a bank in Mauritius?
No need to be so rude, I'm just stating a fact that backing helps in the majority of cases but to answer your question, no I did not get a job because of backing but it sure took a hell of a long time to get one!

How much money do you think is enough to live comfortably in Mauritius?
Simple living is still just as expensive, one avocado costs a whopping Rs 35, one beetroot costs Rs 35 and a pound of tomatoes Rs 100, I bought three peppers last week and that cost over Rs 150. Fruits are so expensive here and its such a shame that no-one bothers to plant veg anymore. All the spare land that we have here is going to waste.

You also forgot to mention clothes and essentials such as toiletries, they are just as expensive too.

gices | 01 May 2012 13:27
How much money do you think is enough to live comfortably in Mauritius?
To get by you need at least Rs 25,000 but to live comfortably as the question asks then you need at least Rs 80,000+. Mauritius is more expensive than the UK as I have found out the hard way. Here are my expenses:
Rent/Mortgage Rs 6,000
Food Rs 8,000
Bills Rs 3,000 (includes water, gas, electricity, phone, internet)
Petrol Rs 3,000
Other Rs 5,000 (this includes entertainment, clothes etc)
= Rs 20,000

Lets face it most people here live beyond their means anyway so have loans and other debts to clear. Plus many do not even save because its too hard to.

Has there been any Police Chase in Mauritius?
lol the police in Mauritius are corrupt all I ever see them do is stop people for silly 'random' checks or signalling traffic, it looks like that's all they do.

Has anyone read the article about dogs in Mauritius featured in UK DailyMail?
There was a news feature in today's newspaper the Daily Mail portraying Mauritius in a bad light regarding all the stray dogs in Mauritius. Here's the link :

http://www.dailymail.co.uk/news/article-2127922/The-dogs-death-row-paradise

I know that stray dogs are a problem in Mauritius and I agree that something needs to be done not only for the health and safety of people but also for the dogs too. But I found that the article takes things out of context and has many inaccuracies.

What do you think?

Do you need external tuition if you go to private schools in Mauritius?
If you go to a private paying school rather than the free government schools do you still have to pay for tuition outside of school? The government schools do not teach you enough to pass exams so that's why you need to take tuition outside of school but does the same apply to private paid schools?

Are there any specialist stores that sell baby stuff all in one place?
Such as baby furniture, clothes, car seats, prams etc. I'd rather go to one place and buy everything.

Peaches | 26 Apr 2011 16:03
Are cars seats for babies compulsory in Mauritius?
I will be coming on holiday to Mauritius soon and hiring a car, do I need a car seat for my child? I have heard that most people do not bother with car seats but in the UK and most parts of Europe they are a legal requirement. If people don't use one what do they do, just hold the child instead?

Becoming an Avon ambassadrice in Mauritius
Unfortunately in Mauritius there are not many part time jobs or flexible jobs and if you manage to get one, you are one of the lucky few. Many countries around the world have many opportunities to work part time but in Mauritius, I haven’t yet come across any. Avon is an established cosmetics company that has branched into jewellery, lingerie and toiletries; you can buy pretty much anything from the health and beauty category of Avon. In the UK however, Avon is affordable and you can get the...

After relocating to Mauritius and finally moving in to my house, I badly needed a reliable internet connection and more choice in TV channels. When I was in the UK, I had the choice of Virgin or Sky, both of them offering good service at an affordable price, movies everyday and also a wide variety of programs to watch. When I signed up to MyT I knew that the majority of channels would be in French but I was prepared for that as I would have to start learning it anyway. Unfortunately unlike Engl...
